A downloadable game for Windows

You play as Ulric Puttock the Third: knight, treasure seeker, and self proclaimed coward.

After you succumb to an evil curse in the depths of a dungeon, you must beat a hasty retreat back to the surface. This is easier said than done however, as the curse has begun to control your movements.

Honourable Retreat is a tile based puzzle game where you must escape each level with the limited moves made available to you. This game was made by Andrew Stevenson and Sam Bell for the GMTK 2020 game jam, following the theme of Out of Control by reducing the amount of influence you have over your basic movements.

HOW TO PLAY

When you start a level you will be given a set of movement cards, which are displayed at the top. These cards show the direction you can move, and how far you can move in that direction.

You move Ulric with the mouse, and his movement path is displayed on-screen. If a movement amount is shown on the card then Ulric will always move that far, unless he is blocked by terrain. If he cannot move at all in the direction given, the card is still played.

If a card has a set amount and direction (as in the example above), it will be played automatically.

At the end of each set of movement cards is a "Run" card. Make sure you're standing on the stairs when this is played to escape!

NOTE ABOUT VERSIONS

The build that was uploaded for the jam contained a major bug that wasn't noticed until submissions closed. Due to this, it was not possible to complete Level 5 in the jam version. A post-jam fix has since been uploaded, which adds additional features and fixes the bug. The original jam version has still been left available.
